Spot info

  • Town: Angourie, New South Wales
  • Water: Sea
  • Sports: Surf
  • Best wind directions: SWWS

Angourie is a tiny village just south of Yamba on the far north coast of New South Wales, and Angourie Point is a right-hand point break that many Australian surfers rank among the best in the country. In 2007 it was declared one of the first National Surfing Reserves, recognising both the quality of the wave and its place in surf culture. The point needs a solid swell from the south-east or east to wrap around the rocks; when it does, it produces powerful, hollow walls over a rock bottom. It is a wave for experienced surfers only, with a strong local crowd and a tricky entry over the rocks. Nearby, Spooky Beach and the back beach offer smaller and less intense options, and the Blue Pools, two flooded former quarry pits behind the point, are a popular freshwater swimming spot. The coast here sits beside Yuraygir National Park, so the surroundings remain largely undeveloped. South-westerly and westerly winds blow offshore at the point. Autumn and winter are the prime season. Check the forecast below.
