Maroubra is one of the longest beaches in Sydney's eastern suburbs, more than a kilometre of sand facing east into the Tasman Sea between Mahon Pool in the north and the rocks of South Maroubra. Because it sits open to the full width of the ocean, it picks up more swell than Bondi or Coogee, and on a small day it is often the only beach in the area with a rideable wave. Several shifting sandbank peaks run along its length, with the south end usually a little more protected from southerly wind and the north end breaking harder on an east or north-east swell. Westerly winds blow offshore here, so autumn and winter mornings, when the westerlies are most common, tend to bring the cleanest surf report. In summer the north-easterly sea breeze usually turns it choppy by late morning. The beach is patrolled by lifesavers and has a surf club, but rip currents form between the banks, so swimmers should stay between the red and yellow flags.
