Crescent Head is a small town on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, about 20 kilometres east of Kempsey, and its right-hand point break is one of the most famous longboarding waves in the world. When a south-east or east swell wraps around the headland, waves peel along the rocky point into the bay in front of the town, producing long, even walls that suit traditional longboards; the Malibu Classic longboard contest has been held here for decades. The point works best on a mid-sized swell and gets crowded on good days. Killick Creek runs into the sea at the northern end of the town beach, and the sheltered creek mouth and main beach are popular with families and beginners. Further south, beyond the headland, Goolawah Beach and Point Plomer face more open swell. Southerly to south-westerly winds blow offshore at the point, which lets it hold up in the southerly changes that wreck other beaches. The beach at Crescent Head is patrolled in season.
