Gracetown is a small settlement on Cowaramup Bay, about 15 kilometres north-west of the town of Margaret River in Western Australia's South West. The bay is surrounded by some of the region's most famous reef breaks, and North Point, on the northern side of the bay, is the best known: a heavy, hollow right-hander that breaks over a shallow limestone reef on a solid south-west groundswell, and one of the most demanding waves in Australia. It is strictly for expert surfers, and the paddle-out and the shallow inside section carry real risk. South Point, on the opposite side of the bay, is a left-hand reef wave that handles bigger swells, and the inside of the bay offers smaller waves when the swell is large. Gracetown sits within the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park surroundings and has few facilities beyond a general store and a surf club; there are no lifeguard patrols on the bay. The cliffs above the bay have a history of rockfalls, so keep away from their base. Easterly winds blow offshore, most often in the mornings from autumn to spring.
