Surfers Paradise is the high-rise heart of the Gold Coast, and its beach is the long, straight, east-facing stretch of sand in front of the towers, part of the more than 50 kilometres of almost unbroken beach that runs from the Spit down to Coolangatta. The beach break here is exposed to swell from the north-east round to the south-east and picks up more wave than the sheltered southern points, but with no headland to hold the sand the banks shift constantly, and the quality changes from week to week. It is a good place for beginners on small days and for anyone after an uncrowded peak away from the famous points. Westerly winds blow offshore, so early mornings before the south-east trade or the summer north-easterly sea breeze are best. The beach is patrolled by Gold Coast lifeguards and the Surfers Paradise surf life saving club; swim between the flags, as rips are common along the open beach.
