Calhetas is a small cove in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, on the coast south of Recife, tucked between the larger beaches of Gaibu and Itapuama. Steep green slopes and granite boulders enclose a short strip of sand, and the water inside is usually clear and calm, which makes it one of the favourite snorkelling spots in Pernambuco: fish gather around the rocks a few metres from the shore. Access is down a steep lane and steps from the road above, so it is not the easiest beach for pushchairs, and space on the sand fills quickly on summer weekends and holidays. At the top of the sand a row of bars puts out tables and parasols. TARTADRONE operates the live cam from Bar do Artur; it looks out over the cove, the moored boats and the rocks, which is a quick way to judge visibility and crowds before driving down. The sea stays warm, about 27 to 28 °C, through the year. Expect the most rain from about April to July; outside those months the cove is usually sunny, and the clearest water comes on calm days with little swell.
