Praia de Candeias is the southern end of the long urban beach that runs from Recife through Boa Viagem and Piedade into the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes. Tower blocks line the seafront avenue, and in front of them a wide band of sand slopes to water that is often calm and turquoise, because a natural reef offshore breaks most of the swell. At low tide that reef forms shallow pools close to the beach where families wade. This stretch of the Recife metropolitan coast is also where Pernambuco's authorities warn about shark incidents: follow the signs, stay in the shallow water inside the reef, and avoid swimming at high tide, at dusk or when the water is murky. The live webcam from TARTADRONE, mounted high above the promenade, looks south along the beach and shows the state of the tide, the colour of the water and how busy the sand is. Water temperature is about 27 to 29 °C year-round. Rain is heaviest roughly from April to July, while the drier months from September to February bring the most beach days and a steady south-east breeze.
