Praia do Preá is a long, open beach in the municipality of Cruz on the west coast of Ceará, about 12 km east of Jericoacoara along the sand. It has become one of the main kitesurfing spots in north-east Brazil because the trade wind blows across it with remarkable regularity, typically from the east and side-shore to slightly onshore, strongest in the second half of the year. At low tide the beach is wide and flat and the water inside the sandbanks is shallow and choppy-flat; as the tide rises small waves form on the outer bars, so freestyle riders and wave riders often share the same session at different hours. Many kiters use Preá as the start or finish of a downwinder along the coast towards Jericoacoara. The live cam on this page, streamed by the Rancho do Peixe beach hotel and kite centre, points along the beach so you can see how many kites are up and how the sea looks before you rig. Water is warm, around 27 °C, all year. The rainy months, roughly February to May, bring lighter and less reliable wind; the steadiest season usually runs from July to January.
