Gollendorf lies on the west coast of Fehmarn, the Baltic island linked to the mainland by the Fehmarnsund bridge. This is the island's westerly-facing side, open to the prevailing wind across the Bay of Mecklenburg, and the stretch of coast below the village is used as a windsurfing and kitesurfing area. The live webcam, run by a local surf shop, looks from the land over a grassy edge to the water and also shows live readings of wind speed, gusts and temperature. Because the coast faces west, south-westerly to north-westerly winds blow onshore or side-onshore and bring the biggest waves the Baltic can offer, which is why wave sailors head to Fehmarn's west coast in autumn storms. Easterly winds blow offshore here and should be avoided. The shoreline is a mix of sand and stones with a shelving bottom, so shoes are useful and beginners are better served on the shallow, flat spots on the island's south side. Fehmarn is one of the sunniest places in Germany, and the summer season brings warm, light winds, while spring and autumn are the windiest months. The water is warmest in August.
