Schönberger Strand is the beach of Schönberg in the Probstei, the flat farming region on the eastern shore of Kiel Bay in Schleswig-Holstein. A long, sandy beach runs below a grassy coastal dyke here, past neighbouring beach sections with the unexpected names Kalifornien and Brasilien, and the area is a favourite of kitesurfers and windsurfers from Kiel and Hamburg. The live webcam looks from behind the dyke over the grass and promenade to the beach and the open water of the bay. The beach faces north, so north-westerly to north-easterly winds blow onshore and are the main kiting directions, while westerly winds blow along the shore; southerly winds are offshore and dangerous for kiters. Kite and windsurf zones are marked along the beach, and in summer they are kept separate from the swimming areas, which have lifeguards. The water is shallow for a long way out, with sandbars that make it suitable for learning but also mean low water levels after long periods of south wind. Schönberger Strand is also home to a museum railway that runs vintage trains along the coast. Sea temperature in Kiel Bay peaks in August.
