Scharbeutz is one of the busiest seaside resorts on Lübeck Bay, on the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein about half an hour from Lübeck and an hour and a half from Hamburg. Its long, fine-sand beach runs past the neighbouring villages of Haffkrug to the north and Timmendorfer Strand to the south, backed by a modern promenade with dune landscaping, cafés and the square at the head of the pier. The live webcam looks from above the beach along the pier and out over the bay. Lübeck Bay is sheltered from the open Baltic, so the sea here is usually calm, with small wind waves and no real swell; easterly winds blow onshore and make it choppier, while westerly winds leave the water flat near the beach. That calm makes Scharbeutz a family beach above all, ideal for swimming, beach chairs and stand-up paddling, and on breezier days beginner windsurfers use the bay too. Lifeguards watch the beach in the summer season. The water warms through June and July and is usually at its warmest in August, when the beach is at its busiest.
