Easkey is a small village on the north coast of County Sligo, facing out over the Atlantic, and its name is known to surfers far beyond Ireland because of two flat limestone reefs that sit either side of the mouth of the Easkey River. Easkey Right breaks beside the ruins of Roslee Castle, east of the river, and Easkey Left peels off the reef to the west; both are powerful, quality waves that pick up north-westerly to north-easterly swell, work best with a southerly or south-westerly offshore wind and have hosted major Irish and European surfing contests. These are not beginner waves: the reef is shallow and sharp, the take-off can be heavy, and the local line-up deserves respect. There is no sandy beach worth the name, just rock shelves and a small pier, so it is a place to surf or to watch rather than to bathe. Parking is near the castle and along the coast road, and the village has a pub, a shop and a surf centre. Beginners usually head to the sand at Enniscrone or Strandhill instead.
