Enniscrone, in the west of County Sligo, sits on the eastern shore of Killala Bay with a beach of about three miles of sand backed by high dunes and a links golf course. The beach faces west-north-west across the bay, and it is a reliable, beginner-friendly beach break when an Atlantic swell from the west or north-west wraps in; the sandbanks shift with the winter storms, so peaks move around, and an east to south-easterly breeze is offshore. Surf schools operate in summer, the beach is lifeguarded in season, and there is a large car park and a promenade at the village end. Enniscrone is also known for its seaweed baths, a traditional seaside cure that has been offered here for more than a century, and for wide views across Killala Bay to the Mayo coast and the mountains beyond. Away from the village end the beach becomes quiet very quickly, with walking through the dunes towards the river mouth at the northern tip. Currents run near the river channel and between the sandbanks at lower tides. The sea in Killala Bay reaches about 15 °C in late summer and drops to around 9 °C in late winter.
