Nuevo Vallarta is the planned resort area on the Nayarit side of Banderas Bay, just north of the Ameca River, which separates it from Jalisco and from Puerto Vallarta's airport on the other bank. Behind a long, straight sandy beach sit large all-inclusive hotels, golf courses and a network of canals with two marinas, while the beach in front slopes gently into the bay. Because Nuevo Vallarta lies deep inside the bay, ocean swell arrives here much reduced and the water is usually calm in the morning; in the afternoon a sea breeze from the west to south-west tends to fill in and puts a light chop on the surface, which is when the stand-up paddlers head back in. Humpback whales come into Banderas Bay to breed roughly from December to March, and whale-watching boats leave from the marinas. Sea turtles also nest on this coast in the second half of the year. The beach is public, although most access is through or beside the hotels along Paseo de los Cocoteros. The live cam on this page is filmed from Alamar Vallarta and looks across the bay towards the mountains south of Puerto Vallarta. Water temperature ranges from roughly 24 °C in early spring to 30 °C in late summer.
