Whangamatā is a beach town on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, about two hours' drive south-east of Auckland, with a four-kilometre ocean beach facing east into the Pacific. Its best-known wave is the Whangamatā Bar, a left-hand sandbar break at the northern end of the beach, by the harbour entrance, which on a good north-east or easterly swell can produce long, fast, hollow rides and is considered one of New Zealand's best lefts. In the late 2000s locals campaigned against a planned marina in the harbour over fears for the wave, and the case became well known in New Zealand surfing. The Bar breaks near the harbour channel with strong tidal currents and is for experienced surfers. The main beach to the south offers easier peaks along the sand for all levels, and Hauturu (Clarke Island) sits just offshore. At Whangamatā, westerly winds blow offshore. The east coast needs swell from the north-east to east, which most often comes with tropical lows from late summer into autumn. The Whangamatā surf life saving club patrols the beach in summer.
