Ngarunui Beach is the main swimming and learning beach of Raglan, the surf town on the west coast of the Waikato, about 45 minutes' drive west of Hamilton. It lies just south of the Raglan Harbour entrance and north of the famous left-hand point breaks of Manu Bay, Whale Bay and Indicators, and it is where the town's surf schools take beginners. The beach faces west-south-west into the Tasman Sea and is a black-sand beach break: it picks up more swell than the points and has peaks that suit beginners and intermediate surfers on small to medium days, while it can become heavy and close out when the swell is big. The car park sits on the cliff above, with a lookout over the beach and a steep path down. Ngarunui is patrolled by the Raglan surf life saving club in summer; outside the flags, strong rips form, particularly near the harbour mouth to the north. Easterly winds blow offshore, typically in the mornings. Water temperatures at Ngarunui range from about 14 °C in winter to 20 °C in summer. The Ngarunui surf report below shows today's swell, wind and water temperature.
