Takapuna Beach is the main beach of Auckland's North Shore, a sweep of golden sand facing east onto the Hauraki Gulf, with the volcanic island of Rangitoto directly across the water. The live cam on this page looks out from Takapuna over the gulf. Protected by Rangitoto and the outer islands, the beach gets no real ocean swell, so the water is usually calm or wind-chopped – ideal for swimming, stand-up paddling, kayaking and sailing, and the boat ramp at the southern end is busy with dinghies and small yachts. Takapuna is also one of the best-known windsurfing and kitesurfing spots on Auckland's east coast: easterly to north-easterly sea breezes blow onshore to cross-onshore on summer afternoons, and the open water out towards Rangitoto gives long runs. South-easterlies blow cross-shore, while westerly winds blow offshore and should be avoided by kiters. Beach users share the water, so riders should keep clear of swimmers near the main beach. At the northern end, a short walk leads to the Takapuna fossil forest, the remains of trees engulfed by lava about 200,000 years ago. Watch the cam and check the wind forecast below.
