Baie de Saint-Jean is the best-known beach on Saint-Barthélemy and the centre of the island's water sports, in the Saint-Jean quarter on the north coast east of Gustavia. The Eden Rock hotel, built in 1953 on a rocky outcrop, splits the beach in two. The western half runs up to the short runway of Rémy-de-Haenen airport, 646 m long, so small planes pass low over the swimmers, and it is the busiest stretch of sand on the island, with parties and concerts in the evening. The eastern half is quieter and suits snorkelling, surfing and water-skiing; a reef protects the bay and keeps the water calm, with a narrow cut through it in the bight. Surfing on the island happens mainly here and at Lorient, Toiny and Anse des Cayes, and windsurfing and wing foiling are practised at Saint-Jean too. Rémy de Haenen landed the first plane on the Saint-Jean savannah in 1946 and later built the Eden Rock. This Baie de Saint-Jean live cam from St-Barth LiveCam looks down from the hill over the bay, the village and the Étang de Saint-Jean, a pond with migrating birds. Pair it with the forecast below to time a surf or a swim.
