Great Bay is the broad bay in front of Philipsburg, the capital of Sint Maarten on the south coast of Saint Martin island. The Scotsman John Philips founded the town around 1733 to centralise the island's trade, on the strip of land between Great Bay and the Great Salt Pond, and two forts, Fort Amsterdam and Fort Willem, were built to defend it. Today the bay holds the island's only deep-water port: six cruise ships can berth at once, and more than two million passengers a year come ashore here. To serve them a boardwalk was built in 2006 between the town and the sand, lined with bars, shops and sunbeds. Philipsburg lies in the rain shadow of the island's hills and is drier than most of the north-eastern Caribbean, though hurricanes have repeatedly forced rebuilding along this low coast.
