On the north shore of St. John, in the USVI, Maho Bay is known for soft sand and calm, shallow water. Its sandy, seagrass-covered floor is one of the best places on the island to see green sea turtles and stingrays, which makes it a favourite for a first snorkel and for families. For decades Maho Bay was a private estate inside the boundaries of the Virgin Islands National Park; the Trust for Public Land bought the 415-acre Estate Maho Bay in 2006, with its beaches, forest and Danish colonial and Taíno remains, and sold it to the National Park Service in stages, the largest addition to the park coming in 2013. This Maho Bay webcam is mounted on a bedroom terrace of The Maho Bay House, a rental villa above the bay, and shows boats sailing in and out, the water of the bay and the sunset over St. John and St. Thomas. In winter the trade winds blow at roughly 11 to 21 knots, and the main season runs from December to April, the driest months; the hurricane season fills the rest of the year.
