Boscombe is the eastern heart of Bournemouth's seafront, part of a continuous run of sand and promenade that stretches for around seven miles from Sandbanks to Hengistbury Head on the south coast of Dorset. The beach is built around Boscombe Pier, a Victorian pier that was refurbished in the late 2000s, with beach huts, cafés and restaurants along the promenade and the cliff-top gardens of Boscombe Chine running down to the sand. Bournemouth's sand is fine and golden, the water shelves gently and the beaches are lifeguarded in summer, which is why they are among the busiest in Britain on a hot day. In 2009 an artificial surf reef was built off Boscombe, the first in Europe; it never produced the waves that had been promised and has since been closed to surfers. Real surf does still arrive in winter when a strong south-westerly swell runs up the Channel, but most of the year the water is calm enough for swimming and paddleboarding. Bournemouth Pier is a twenty-minute walk west along the promenade. The sea temperature reaches about 18 °C in August.
