Weymouth Beach is the classic Georgian seaside of Dorset: a long curve of soft, golden sand in Weymouth Bay, backed by the terraces and hotels of the Esplanade, with the painted Jubilee Clock and the statue of King George III, whose visits made the town fashionable, standing on the promenade. The Isle of Portland shelters the bay from the west, so the sea here is usually calm and shallow, shelving very gently; that makes it one of the safest family bathing beaches on the south coast, with lifeguards in the summer season and plenty of room for paddling, swimming and stand-up paddleboarding. Strong easterly winds are the exception, pushing short waves straight onto the beach. The town has a busy harbour and a ferry terminal a few minutes' walk to the south, and the 2012 Olympic sailing events were held on the waters of the bay and neighbouring Portland Harbour. In summer the seafront fills with beach huts, deckchairs and seasonal attractions. The sea here warms to about 18 °C by late summer.
