Aquinnah is the town at the western tip of Martha's Vineyard, off Cape Cod, and the home of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). Its landmark is the Gay Head Cliffs, banded walls of red, white and gray clay rising above the sea, a National Natural Landmark, with the Gay Head Light on top. Below them is Moshup Beach, named for a giant of Wampanoag legend, a long beach reached by a walk from the town parking lot; climbing on or taking clay from the cliffs is not allowed. This live cam from Go Martha's Vineyard looks out from Aquinnah over the beach and the surf. The southwest-facing shore here is open to the Atlantic, so it gets more swell than the sheltered north side of the island: south and southwest ground swell from hurricanes in late summer and fall and wind swell from summer southwesterlies. North and northeast winds are offshore, and the beachbreak and boulder-strewn points can be good on those days, though currents along the cliffs are strong. The water reaches about 20 to 22 °C in August and falls to about 4 °C in late winter. Parking in summer is paid, and there are no lifeguards on Moshup Beach.
