Bethany Beach calls itself the Quiet Resort, and it lives up to it: a small town in Sussex County, Delaware, between Fenwick Island and Dewey Beach, with a short wooden boardwalk, family restaurants and rows of beach cottages rather than the arcades and high-rises of its bigger neighbours. Visitors are greeted at the end of Garfield Parkway by Chief Little Owl, a large carved totem pole that has become the town's emblem. The beach is a straight Atlantic shore of sand, groomed and guarded by the Bethany Beach Patrol in summer, and it is a decent beach break when east or north-east swell arrives, especially from autumn nor'easters and from hurricanes tracking offshore in late summer; the cleanest conditions come with light westerly wind. Summer days are often small and good for bodyboarding and learning. Like other Delaware beaches, it can have strong rip currents and a steep shorebreak after storms, and swimming is safest near the stands. Indian River Inlet, a few miles north, is the state's best-known surf break. We do not have a live beach cam for Bethany Beach yet; the surf report and water temperature below help.
