Sheboygan is a city on the western shore of Lake Michigan, about 50 miles north of Milwaukee, and it bills itself as the Malibu of the Midwest because of its freshwater surfing scene. The city's north side has a long sandy municipal beach and Deland Park by the harbor, with the Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse at the end of the north pier. This live beach cam from Visit Sheboygan looks over the beach and the lake. Lake Michigan has no tide and no ground swell, so the waves here are wind swell: when a strong north, northeast or east wind blows down the length of the lake, usually with fall and early winter storms, it builds short-period surf that local surfers ride beside the breakwater and along the beach; the best days come as the wind turns offshore from the west after a storm. The Dairyland Surf Classic, one of the oldest freshwater surf contests, is held in Sheboygan around Labor Day weekend. The pier and breakwater create strong currents when the waves are up, and the lake can be dangerous; never go out on the pier in storms. Water temperature is about 20 °C in August at best, and the lake often freezes along the shore in winter.
