Wells Street Beach is a city beach in Gary, Indiana, on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, at the north end of Wells Street in the Miller area, between the steel mills to the west and the dunes that lead east toward Indiana Dunes National Park. It is a stretch of sand backed by low dunes, with views across the lake to the Chicago skyline on clear days, and it is one of several public beaches along Gary's lakefront. This live weather camera from the Indiana Weather Network looks out from near the beach over the sand and the water, and it is useful for checking waves and wind at the south end of the lake. Because Lake Michigan is open for more than 300 miles to the north, a strong north or northeast wind builds sizeable wind waves here, especially in fall, and freshwater surfers ride them along this shore; on most summer days the lake is calm and the water is shallow near shore. The southern shore is known for dangerous currents in rough surf, and there have been many drownings along it, so pay attention to wave forecasts and any posted warnings. The water warms to about 22 to 24 °C in August and ice forms along the shore in winter.
