There is no webcam for Kirra, so this surf report leans on the swell forecast and the water temperature alone. Kirra is a beachside neighbourhood of Coolangatta, right at the Gold Coast's southern tip, where the rocky Kirra Point divides Kirra Beach from Coolangatta Beach. The point is one of the most famous surf breaks in the world, a right-hander once known for long, high-quality barrels. Its story is about sand. The Big Groyne went in during 1972 to hold sand at Coolangatta, and surfers protested it would kill the wave. Since 2001 the Tweed River bypass has pumped sand north, burying both groynes and changing the break's character, and Cyclone Alfred cut sand cliffs of 2 to 3 metres in March 2025. South-east swell from March to August gives the best chance, though reviewers say it fires only a few times a year, and local guides disagree over the ideal wind. It is no place for learners. Swimmers should stay between the flags, as currents run strong when the swell is up. The Kirra Surf Life Saving Club dates from 1916.
