Middleton is a small town on the Fleurieu Peninsula, about 80 kilometres south of Adelaide, between Port Elliot and Goolwa, and its long south-facing beach is the most popular surf beach within easy reach of the South Australian capital. Unlike the Adelaide metropolitan beaches inside Gulf St Vincent, which rarely see waves, Middleton is open to Southern Ocean swell coming through the gap between Kangaroo Island and the mainland. The wide, shallow sandbanks produce rolling, crumbly waves that break a long way out, which makes it a well-known learner and longboard beach, and surf schools operate here in summer. On bigger swells the outside banks can hold larger waves for experienced surfers. The beach continues east towards Goolwa and the Murray Mouth as an almost unbroken stretch of sand. Northerly winds blow offshore, and autumn and winter usually bring the best combination of swell and offshore mornings. Southern right whales visit Encounter Bay in winter and can sometimes be seen from the shore. Water temperatures are cool, ranging from roughly 13 to 20 °C.
