Torquay, about 100 kilometres south-west of Melbourne, is the start of the Great Ocean Road and the town where the surf brands Rip Curl and Quiksilver began; the Australian National Surfing Museum is here too. The main surf beach, often called Torquay Surf Beach or Back Beach, faces south-east between Point Danger and the cliffs towards Jan Juc, and is the town's most consistent beach-break, picking up swell from the Southern Ocean that wraps into Bass Strait. It is a popular learning beach with surf schools, while Point Danger at its eastern end offers reef waves for more experienced surfers. Bells Beach, home of the long-running Easter pro contest, is a few kilometres further west. On the sheltered eastern side of Point Danger, Fishermans Beach and the Front Beach are calmer and are used by windsurfers and kitesurfers, particularly in the summer south-westerly and south-easterly winds. Northerly and north-westerly winds blow offshore on the surf beach, so autumn and winter are the prime months. The water is cool year-round; a wetsuit is the norm. The Torquay surf report below shows today's swell, wind and water temperature.
