Spot info

  • Town: Thirroul, Wollongong
  • Water: Sea
  • Sports: Surf
  • Best wind directions: WNW

Thirroul is a village on the northern Illawarra coast, about 60 kilometres south of Sydney, where the escarpment drops steeply to a narrow coastal strip. Thirroul Beach faces east between McCauley Park in the south and Sandon Point to the north, and the live surf cam on this page looks over the northern end of the beach. The beach catches east and north-east swell and breaks over sandbanks, with an ocean pool at the southern end. Sandon Point, at the northern tip, is one of the best-known waves on the New South Wales south coast: a right-hand reef and point break that needs a solid south to south-east swell and is for experienced surfers, as it breaks over rock and draws a committed local crowd. Westerly winds blow offshore along this stretch, and the escarpment can funnel strong westerlies in winter. The beach is patrolled by the Thirroul surf life saving club in season. Watch the cam, then check the surf report, wind and water temperature below before heading down.
