Woolamai Beach is the surf beach on the south-eastern corner of Phillip Island, about two hours' drive south-east of Melbourne, below the granite headland of Cape Woolamai. It faces south into Bass Strait and is fully exposed to Southern Ocean swell, which makes it one of the most consistent surf beaches in Victoria: when other spots are flat, Woolamai usually has a wave. That exposure also makes it powerful. The beach is known for strong rips and heavy shore break, and it is generally regarded as a beach for competent surfers and strong swimmers; in summer the surf life saving club patrols a flagged area near the car park and swimmers should stay inside it. The sandbanks shift along the beach and peaks vary from day to day. Northerly winds blow offshore, which happens most often in autumn and winter. Cape Woolamai itself, part of the Phillip Island Nature Parks, has walking tracks to the Pinnacles rock formations and is a breeding site for short-tailed shearwaters.
