The Faro Monumental is the emblem of La Serena, in Chile's Coquimbo region: a white lighthouse with a crenellated base, built in the early 1950s on the seafront as part of the city's urban plan of that period. It stands at the start of the Avenida del Mar, the coastal avenue that runs for several kilometres south towards Coquimbo past a continuous sandy beach, hotels, apartment buildings and restaurants. The beach in front of the lighthouse is wide and open to the Pacific; waves are usually moderate, and bodyboarders and surfers use the sandbanks along the avenue, while lifeguarded bathing areas are marked in the summer season. Like the rest of northern-central Chile, La Serena has mild, dry weather, but mornings are often grey with the coastal fog that locals call camanchaca, which tends to clear by afternoon. The sea is cool, roughly 14 to 18 °C, warmest in February. The live cam, from the La Serena Drone channel with the support of the municipality, looks straight at the lighthouse with the surf behind it. January and February are the busy holiday months, when the beach fills with visitors from Santiago and inland cities.
