Playa Acapulco is one of the central beaches of Viña del Mar, Chile's best-known seaside resort, running north from the old Muelle Vergara pier along Avenida San Martín and its line of apartment towers. It is a broad, sandy town beach within walking distance of hotels, the casino and the city centre, so in the summer season, roughly December to March, it is packed with families from Santiago, about 120 km inland. The sea is the cold Pacific of the Humboldt Current: water temperature is typically around 13 to 17 °C, warmest in late summer, and the waves can be powerful, so lifeguards post flags and bathing is only allowed in marked areas during the season. Morning cloud and coastal fog are common even in summer, often burning off by midday. The live cam is one of several run by Marejadas UV, a project of the Universidad de Valparaíso's ocean engineering school that monitors swell along this coast; it looks down onto the beach and the pier from a building on the seafront, showing the size of the waves and how crowded the sand is. Large swells, called marejadas, are most frequent in winter.
