Las Torpederas is a small sandy beach on the Playa Ancha hill in Valparaíso, below the coastal road that winds around the headland towards the lighthouse at Punta Ángeles. Its name recalls the torpedo boats once based here by the Chilean Navy, which still has its headquarters in the city. Facing north into Valparaíso Bay, the beach is sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly swell, and through most of the summer it stays calmer than the open coast, which makes it the city's favourite family beach; a seafront with changing rooms, a bathing pavilion and colourful murals on the stairways down from the road sits behind the sand. The Pacific here is still cold, about 13 to 16 °C, and during winter storms and northerly swells waves can break over the walls. Weekends in January and February bring crowds from the surrounding hills and from Santiago. Marejadas UV runs the live cam; the swell-watching project belongs to a university faculty that is nearby on Playa Ancha; it looks over the cove towards the bay and is part of a network of cams used to document swell events along the Valparaíso coast.
