Göhren sits on the Mönchgut peninsula in the south-east of Rügen, on a headland called the Nordperd that pushes out into the Baltic and splits the coast into two beaches: the North Beach with its pier and promenade, and the quieter, more natural South Beach. Göhren is also the eastern terminus of the Rasender Roland, the narrow-gauge steam railway that runs across the island via Sellin and Binz. The live webcam looks from above the North Beach over the sand and the open sea towards the east. The North Beach faces east, so westerly winds blow offshore and keep the bay calm, while easterly winds roll in onshore and bring the bigger waves; the South Beach catches the southerly and south-easterly winds instead, so on most days one side of the headland is sheltered. Stones and boulders lie at the foot of the Nordperd cliffs, so the best swimming is on the sandy stretches near the pier, which are guarded in the summer season. Walks over the Nordperd give views over the whole of Mönchgut. The water reaches its highest temperature in August.
