Sellin is a seaside resort on the south-east coast of Rügen, between Binz and Göhren, built on a high, wooded bank above the Baltic. Its main street, the Wilhelmstraße, is lined with restored white villas and leads straight to the edge of the cliff, from where a long staircase and an inclined lift take you down to the beach and the pier. The pier, with its pavilion-style restaurant at the seaward end, is one of the most photographed sights on the island, and a diving gondola beside it lets visitors look at the Baltic seabed. The live webcam looks down from the top of the bank over the pier, the beach and the open sea. The beach faces north-east, so westerly winds blow offshore and keep the water calm, while north-easterly and easterly winds blow onshore and can bring short, steep waves, especially in autumn. The sand is fine and the water close to the beach shallow, and the main beach has lifeguards in the summer season; quieter sections stretch along the foot of the cliff in both directions.
