Zinnowitz is a seaside resort on the north-west coast of Usedom, the island shared between Germany and Poland at the mouth of the Oder. Its long promenade is lined with villas in the classic resort style, and the pier, which carries a diving gondola that lowers visitors to the seabed, is the centre of the beach. Every summer the open-air stage by the beach hosts the Vineta festival plays, based on the legend of a sunken city off the Usedom coast. The live webcam stands on the beach at neighbouring Trassenheide and looks south-east along the sand towards the Zinnowitz pier. The coast here faces north-north-east, so northerly winds blow onshore and bring the waves, while southerly and south-westerly winds come off the island and leave the water flat near the beach. The sand is fine and white, the water shelves gently, and the main beach has lifeguards in the season, making it a popular family beach; on windy days windsurfers and kitesurfers use the quieter stretches away from the bathing areas. Usedom is one of the sunniest places in Germany. The Baltic here warms up through June and July and is at its warmest in August.
