Baishawan, white sand bay, is a half-moon bay in Shimen District on the north coast of Taiwan, enclosed by Fuguijiao, the northernmost cape of the main island, and the headland of Linshanbi. Both capes are the ends of andesite lava flows that ran north from the Zhuzi volcano some 700,000 to 800,000 years ago. Between them, algal reefs and shell fragments make up the sand, which is why it is unusually pale for this coast, and the beach is about a kilometre long. Under Japanese rule it was nicknamed the Kamakura of Taiwan, and it has been a favourite summer resort of northern Taiwan ever since. The scenic-area office for the North Coast and Guanyinshan manages the beach and runs a visitor centre with paid showers, and lifeguards are on duty while the beach is open. It is suited to swimming and paddling as well as to surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing, because the north-east monsoon blows steadily from autumn to spring.
