Wai'ao Beach is the black-sand beach of Toucheng Township in Yilan County, on the north-east coast of Taiwan, facing Guishan Island, the volcanic turtle-shaped island a few kilometres offshore. Toucheng is known for its fresh seafood and for this beach, which is among the most popular surf beaches in Taiwan: photographs on Wikimedia Commons show the water crowded with surfers and beginners in front of the long shore, with the green hills of the Snow Mountain foothills behind and temples and cafes along the coast road. Just south lies Wushi Harbour, from which boat operators run trips around Guishan Island and whale- and dolphin-watching tours; paragliders launch from the hills above. Wai'ao Station on the Yilan Line is right by the beach, so it is easy to reach by train from Taipei. The scenic-area office for the north-east coast and Yilan operates this 4K camera, which looks along the beach. The beach faces east into the Pacific and gets surf all year, largest in the north-east monsoon season and during typhoons, when currents can be strong.
