Chuanfanshi, Sail Rock, is a coral-limestone rock standing in the shallows on the east side of Kenting National Park in Hengchun, Pingtung, at the southern tip of Taiwan, about 4 km south of Sheding Park along the coast road. The rock is about 18 metres high; it broke from the steep edge of the old coral terrace when erosion undercut its base and tumbled onto the reef flat, and because its Pleistocene limestone is harder than the surroundings it has stood there ever since. From a distance it looks like a ship hoisting sail, hence the name, and many people say its profile resembles Richard Nixon, so it is also called Nixon's Head. The area is a designated special landscape zone of the national park, and climbing the rock is not allowed. Beside it lies a small sandy beach with coral and rock in the water, used for swimming and snorkelling when the sea is calm; the Fullon resort and its hill stand at the north end. This live camera is operated by Kenting National Park and shows the beach and the sea in front of the rock; at night only the dark water is visible. Check the wind and swell here before snorkelling: the east coast takes Pacific swell.
