Spot info

  • Town: Perranporth, Cornwall
  • Water: Sea
  • Sports: Surf
  • Best wind directions: ENEEESE

Perranporth has one of the longest beaches in Cornwall: around three miles of sand running north from the village to the dunes of Perran Sands and on towards Ligger Point. Because it is so long and so open to the west, it picks up almost any Atlantic swell and spreads the crowd out, which makes it a favourite with surf schools and with surfers who want a peak of their own. The southern end near the village is the busiest, with Chapel Rock and its tidal pool in the middle of the beach at low tide and the Droskyn headland closing the bay. Wind from the south-east to east blows offshore and grooms the waves; a westerly makes it choppy. Rips form along the beach and between the banks, especially on a dropping tide, so swim between the flags when the lifeguards are on duty in summer. Behind the beach the village has car parks, surf hire and a famous bar right on the sand. In the dunes lies St Piran's Oratory, linked to Cornwall's patron saint. There is no live webcam for Perranporth here yet; the surf forecast and sea temperature below are the best way to judge conditions.
