Watergate Bay is a two-mile sweep of sand on the north Cornish coast between Newquay and Mawgan Porth, walled in by tall slate cliffs and open to the full Atlantic. It is one of the most reliable beach breaks in the county: the long, flat sandbanks spread the swell into peaks along the whole bay, so even a busy summer day leaves room for everyone. Low to mid tide usually gives the best shape; at high tide the water runs right up to the cliffs and large parts of the beach disappear, so walkers heading along the base of the cliffs can be cut off. Offshore here means an easterly breeze. When the wind turns onshore or cross-shore from the west, kitesurfers and wave-sailors take over, and the bay is one of the best-known kite spots in Cornwall. A hotel, a watersports centre, cafés and a car park sit at the southern end by the slipway, and the coast road and Newquay Airport are only a few minutes away. Sea temperature peaks at about 17 °C in late summer. There is no live beach webcam for Watergate Bay yet; use the surf forecast and wind graph below instead.
