Spot info

  • Town: Mawgan Porth, Cornwall
  • Water: Sea
  • Sports: Surf
  • Best wind directions: ENEEESE

Mawgan Porth is a compact sandy cove where the Menalhyl valley meets the sea, a few miles north of Newquay and just south of the National Trust cliffs at Bedruthan Steps. The beach faces due west and sits between two rocky headlands, which focus the Atlantic swell into a fun, punchy beach break that usually works best from low to mid tide. A stream runs out across the sand and shifts the banks around, so the best peak changes with the season. Rocks along both sides and the rip that forms beside them call for care when the surf is up; outside the summer lifeguard season there is nobody watching the water. The village behind the beach is small, with a car park, a surf shop, a few places to eat and the coast path running north towards Bedruthan. The live webcam on this page looks down the valley over the dunes to the beach, so you can see the surf and the crowd before driving over. Expect the sea to be around 16–17 °C in late summer and close to 10 °C in early spring. Below the beach webcam you will find the surf forecast and sea temperature.
