Porth Beach is the sheltered cove on the eastern edge of Newquay, tucked between the grassy promontory of Trevelgue Head and the rocks of Porth Island. Trevelgue Head carries the earthworks of an Iron Age cliff castle and is reached by a footbridge from the beach side, which makes the walk round the headland one of the best short strolls in town. The bay faces north-west but is far more protected than Fistral, so the shore break here is usually small and friendly, and on big days it can be the place to look when the open beaches are closing out. At low tide the sand reaches a long way out and a stream winds across it to the sea; at high tide the beach shrinks to a narrow strip below the road, so check the tide times before laying out a towel. A car park and cafés sit right behind the sand. The Cornish sea is coolest in late winter at around 9–10 °C and warms to roughly 16–17 °C by late summer. We have no live beach webcam for Porth yet; the sea temperature, wind and swell forecast below are updated through the day.
