Higgins Beach is a small beach neighborhood in Scarborough, Maine, on the south side of Cape Elizabeth, where a curve of sand about half a mile long sits between rocky ledges and the mouth of the Spurwink River. It is best known as one of the most consistent surf beaches in southern Maine, and on a good swell the lineup fills with local surfers in hooded winter wetsuits. This live webcam belongs to a local vacation rental office and looks out over the beach and the break. The beach faces south-southeast, so it picks up hurricane swell in late summer and fall, long-period southerly swell, and the waves from nor'easters as they turn; north and northwest winds are offshore. At low tide the hull of the Howard W. Middleton, a schooner wrecked here in 1897, shows in the sand near the middle of the beach. Parking is very limited and mostly restricted, so it is best to arrive early or by bike, and the town restricts dogs on the beach in summer during piping plover nesting. The Gulf of Maine is cold: the water is around 16 to 18 °C in August and close to 4 °C from February to March, when surfers wear 6 mm wetsuits, gloves and boots.
