Ogunquit Beach in southern Maine is a three-mile barrier beach of fine, pale sand, with the tidal Ogunquit River running behind it, so that at the main entrance you cross a footbridge or walk past the river mouth to reach the ocean. The name is usually translated from the Abenaki as beautiful place by the sea, and the village has been an artists' colony since the late nineteenth century. At low tide the river behind the dunes leaves shallow, sun-warmed pools that are popular with families with small children, while the ocean side is open to the Atlantic and cold for most of the year. To the south, the Marginal Way, a cliff-top footpath of a little over a mile, leads to the fishing harbour of Perkins Cove, and Footbridge Beach and Moody Beach continue to the north. The beach catches east and south-east swell from autumn storms and hurricanes far offshore, giving occasional surf with a westerly wind, but it is mainly a place for walking, swimming on warm days and watching the tide. The live cam on this page is the Sea Chambers hotel stream, looking over the river mouth and the beach. The main beach has lifeguards from late June to Labor Day. The water is about 4 °C in February and 18 °C in August.
