Salisbury Beach is the northernmost ocean beach in Massachusetts, a long stretch of sand running from the mouth of the Merrimack River north to the New Hampshire line at Seabrook. The southern part is Salisbury Beach State Reservation, a large state park with a campground, a boat ramp on the river and a wide beach, while the center of town around Broadway has been a summer resort since the late 1800s, once famous for its amusement rides and dance halls. This live beach cam is mounted on the Salisbury Beach pavilion and looks south along the beach. The shore faces east toward the Gulf of Maine, so the surf comes mainly with nor'easters and with long-period swell from hurricanes passing well offshore in late summer and fall; west winds are offshore. Waves are small or flat on many summer days, and the beach is good for swimming and walking. The mouth of the Merrimack, at the south end, has very strong tidal currents and shifting shoals and is not a place to swim. The water is cold: about 18 to 20 °C at best in August and near 4 °C in late winter. Lifeguards are posted in summer.
