Plum Island is an 11-mile barrier island off the coast of northern Massachusetts, between the mouth of the Merrimack River at Newburyport and Ipswich Bay. The northern end, reached by the causeway from Newburyport, has houses, the Plum Island Light and a public beach, while about three quarters of the island is protected as the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, a stop for migrating birds with a beach that closes in spring and summer while piping plovers nest. This live cam from Newburyport.com looks out over Plum Island Beach on the south side of the town section. The beach faces east into the Gulf of Maine and gets its surf from nor'easters and from distant hurricane swell in late summer and fall; west winds blow offshore. Winter storms have repeatedly eroded the dunes here, and several houses were lost to the sea, so beach access paths change. The river mouth at the north end has fierce currents. In July the island is known for greenhead flies, which bite hard. The water is cold, around 18 °C in August and near 4 °C in late winter, and lifeguards are only at some beaches in summer.
