Spot info

  • Town: Croyde, North Devon

Croyde Bay in North Devon is widely rated as one of the best beach breaks in England. The small, west-facing bay sits between Baggy Point, a National Trust headland to the north, and the rocks of Downend to the south, and the shallow sandbanks between them turn a decent Atlantic swell into fast, hollow waves, especially around low tide. That quality draws crowds: on a good summer weekend the line-up is packed, and the low-tide waves break hard over shallow sand, so beginners are better off on the gentler inside or on neighbouring Saunton. Mid to high tide gives softer, fatter waves. The wind you want is from the east; anything westerly quickly makes the bay messy. Lifeguards patrol in the summer season, and rips form beside the rocks at both ends. Behind the beach the village keeps its thatched cottages, pubs and surf shops, with car parks and campsites along the lanes, which can become congested in high summer. The sea off North Devon reaches about 16–17 °C in late summer and drops close to 9 °C in late winter. There is no Croyde surf cam on this page yet; the surf forecast and sea temperature below are updated through the day.
