Woolacombe Beach runs for about three miles along Morte Bay in North Devon, from the village of Woolacombe in the north to Putsborough in the south, with Morte Point and Baggy Point standing at either end. The broad, gently sloping sand and the long rolling waves make it one of the best places in the region to learn to surf, and the size of the beach means there is room for surf schools, bodyboarders and families even in August. The northern end by the village is the busiest, with lifeguards, a promenade, parking and shops; the southern end at Putsborough is tucked in under Baggy Point, which shelters it from south-westerly winds and makes it a useful option when the rest of the bay is blown out. An easterly breeze is offshore along the whole beach. Rips can still form between the banks, so stay between the red and yellow flags in the patrolled season. Behind the sand are dunes and holiday parks, and the coast path runs above the bay in both directions. Sea temperature tops out around 16–17 °C in late summer.
